TASK: Understanding what "Zero Day" attacks are is important. They are basically unfixed bugs in software. These unfixed bugs allow people that know about them to exploit them or to sell them on for others to exploit. There is in fact a market for Zero Day vulnerabilities that is actively pursued by governments and corporations.

WHY: Understanding that these Zero Days exist makes you more aware of the importance of improving your security and privacy. These bugs remain unfixed and abused until eventually they are found out, many are still out there still being abused. This has meant that governments can access your phone for example without you knowing by using tools like Pegasus which rely on zero day exploits. These are often chained together. Nicole Perlroth explains this eloquently in her book "This is How They Tell Me The World Ends". A brilliant and dark read on this market so few people know about.

Updating your software and using a variety of different tools that dont all rely on the same point of failure can help protect you. The basic idea is try not to be the low hanging fruit. ie, be more secure than the masses and you will at least have a chance.
